Gold Identification

Gold items are typically stamped with a karat mark, denoting their gold content or fineness:

– 24k signifies 99.9% pure gold.

– 18k, 14k, and 10k correspond to 75%, 58.3%, and 41.7% gold content, respectively, alloyed with other metals for strength and durability.

These markings are usually found inside ring bands or on the clasps of chains and bracelets. Items marked GF (Gold Filled), GP (Gold Plated), or RGP (Rolled Gold Plate) contain only surface-level gold and possess negligible intrinsic metal value.

Silver Identification

Silver Jewelry & Flatware

Genuine silver items are often marked with purity stamps such as:

– .999 or 999 – Fine silver (99.9% pure)

– .925 or 925 – Sterling silver (92.5% pure)

These marks are typically located on the underside of flatware, inside rings, or on jewelry clasps.
Items labeled EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver), German Silver, or Nickel Silver are silver-plated and do not contain measurable silver content. As such, they hold no melt value.

Platinum Identification

Platinum is marked with precise fineness stamps such as:

– PT950 or 950 Plat – 95% pure platinum (common in fine jewelry)

– PT900 or 900 Plat – 90% pure platinum

These markings are generally found inside rings or on the back of pendants and earrings.
Platinum is a dense, valuable metal, and items with proper markings have significant resale value. Items without clear stamps may require spectrometer analysis for verification.
